Air laid technology

Airlaid is a web formation process. Airlaying (airforming) is a method of forming a web by mixing fibres with air to form a uniform air-fibre mixture that is then deposited on a moving air-permeable belt or wire.

Airlaid technology generally differs from other drylaid webs in its use of very short fibres, (mainly wood pulp). As a result, most products obtained through this method offer high absorbency, are inexpensive and biodegradable. When the latex used as bonding material in airlaid webs is dissolved in water, the web becomes dispersible and flushable.

The Airlaid web can be bonded in several ways.

  • Latex bonding (LBAL)

A liquid binder is applied to both sides of the web, which is thereafter dried and cured to achieve the dry and wet strength needed. Typical applications are table top products, dry and wet wipes, industrial wipes and household products.

  • Thermal bonding (TBAL)

Bonding fibers, typically bicomponent fibers, are included in the web formation, and the web is heated to activate the melting components of the synthetic fibers to bond the web. Typically used for absorbent cores, where Super Absorbent Powder can also be present and locked into the web structure by the synthetic fibers.

  • Multi bonding (MBAL)

A bonding process where latex and thermal bonding are combined, typically where the inner part of the produdt is thermal bonded and the surfaces have a slight layer of binder to eliminate dust and linting. Typically used for absorbent cores, household products, dry and wet wipes. Can also contain Super Absorbent Powder.

  • Hydrogen bonding (XBAL)

Here bonding is achieved by a combination of pressure, humidity and temperature to create so called hydrogen bonds, eliminating the need for other bonding methods. Typically used for absorbent cores.

  • Spunlace or hydroentanglement bonding

An airlaid web is formed on top of a carded or spunbonded web. The web is then hydroentangled (water needled), which will create the web strength. The web is thereafter dried. Typical application is wet wipes
